Now Meadows, a Beckley native, lives entangled in the Mountain State's running community. As he looks to grow the WVU Tech program, he's also a co-manager at Robert's Running in Charleston.
Because of Meadows' connection with Robert's and involvement in running, the Golden Bears coach said he met several of his WVU Tech harriers prior to becoming coach, whether running alongside them in a race or selling them running shoes.
As his first task, Meadows said he's made connections with both returning and incoming Tech runners.
"My No. 1 priority was basically just contacting all the athletes that either committed to come this fall or were already members of the team," he said.

Like his incoming runners, Meadows said he's learning the WVU Tech campus and Montgomery.
"I took the tour that they would give an incoming freshman," he said. "I was shown around and pleasantly surprised by the facilities, the classrooms and dorms, for that matter."
With the exuberance of a freshman and experience of a seasoned runner, Meadows said he's eager to get to work with the backing of WVU Tech's administration.
"The athletic department is really excited about revitalizing this program, which is nice, because I know sometimes cross country falls on the backburner as far as priorities go," Meadows said, mentioning he believes he is the first-ever Tech coach dedicated entirely to the cross country program. "It's been nice to go in and feel welcomed."
A former Concord runner, Meadows said he's consulted with coaches at Concord and UC to develop a fall schedule for his runners.
More than providing running instruction, Meadows said he wants to be a confidant for his team's members.
"I don't want to just be this authoritative figure barking out commands," he said. "I want them to be able to confide in me if they have a problem or if they need help with something outside of running, as well as within running."
His youth may help him connect with his runners and it may provide more motivation to prove his coaching ability as some could cast doubt upon him, Meadows said, but that's a challenge he's ready to accept.
"Someone mentioned to me when we were running the other day, they said 'You realize you're probably the youngest head coach in West Virginia right now?'" he said. "I said yeah, that's probably true and that does put a little bit of pressure on me, I guess, but I think I work well under pressure."
From the dread of a first practice to leading a collegiate program, Meadows knows all the steps in between as he readies to prepare his program this season.
