Upland HS: Vacating the Fontana job, and having turned down the Claremont job after his friend Jerry DeFabiis withdrew his name from consideration, John McNally will now become the new head boys' basketball coach at Upland HS, replacing Jeff Klein (see above) who took the Chaffey College job at the end of the season.
McNally will start the new position next week. He is expected also to teach P.E. and government at Upland. Last season Upland won the I-AAA CIF Southern Section title, but graduated a ton of seniors including University of Nevada signee Kirk Snyder, but the cupboard isn't completely bare and they have some very interesting and talented players returning, including Tye-Juan Hatter who has been on the varsity for the past two seasons . . . and hey, maybe Aaron Gipson can transfer again. . . McNally told the LA Times about his decision to move to Upland: "It was one of those things.

John McNally update: The Upland High School boys basketball coach returned home in time for New Year's and is eying a return to the sidelines later in the month.
However, it's doubtful the veteran coach actually will get to the bench. McNally suffered a broken leg early in December and went through some complications that forced him into the hospital. His recovery no doubt was aided when wife Clarissa took away his cell phone. ...

For the past few days, Upland High School boys basketball coach John McNally has been at the center of thoughts and prayers of many in the area, including this corner.
McNally, who would normally be helping Jerry DeFabis, Bill Burke and John Romanoli run the annual Inland Empire Classic this week, is instead in a Los Angeles-area hospital recuperating from the aftermath of recent surgery. According to DeFabis, McNally has rallied and is in stable condition. McNally, a head coach at Damien and Fontana before moving to Upland, encountered a setback following surgery for a broken leg. Anthony Mason, who played for McNally at Upland, is the Scots interim coach. It's not known whether McNally will be able to return to the sidelines this season. If he does, he'll probably not be stomping his left leg anytime soon. He broke the leg with such a move, but it's uncertain whether it was during a practice or a game.
