Upland HS: Vacating the Fontana job, and having turned down the Claremont job after his friend Jerry DeFabiis withdrew his name from consideration, John McNally will now become the new head boys' basketball coach at Upland HS, replacing Jeff Klein (see above) who took the Chaffey College job at the end of the season.
McNally will start the new position next week. He is expected also to teach P.E. and government at Upland. Last season Upland won the I-AAA CIF Southern Section title, but graduated a ton of seniors including University of Nevada signee Kirk Snyder, but the cupboard isn't completely bare and they have some very interesting and talented players returning, including Tye-Juan Hatter who has been on the varsity for the past two seasons . . . and hey, maybe Aaron Gipson can transfer again. . . McNally told the LA Times about his decision to move to Upland: "It was one of those things.

"We reminded the kids that we still have to play defense," Upland coach John McNally said.
"I thought that was key," McNally said.

"We didn't play very hard in the first half, and you can't play someone this good and not play hard or things are going to get out of control," Upland coach John McNally said.
"Loyola is a very talented, deep team, so give them credit, but I am very proud of my boys because we came back from a very large deficit and made it a game," McNally said.

UPLAND - It wasn't pretty and it got sloppy at times, but Upland High coach John McNally will take the Highlanders' 71-63 Baseline League boys basketball victory over visiting Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.
"We got great play at times from our big three and we're happy to get a win any time we play in this league, but I wasn't thrilled with the way we played `not to lose' late in the game," McNally said. "They're a pretty good shooting team and they showed it late when they cut the lead, so we didn't do the right thing by backing off of their guys and giving them shots," McNally said.
