"Hip and knee replacement surgeries are one of the biggest success stories of medicine," says John A. Maltry, M.D., [Tucson Orthopaedic Institute surgeon and] Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Program at Northwest Medical Center (NMC). "Millions of people worldwide have been restored to a comfortable, active lifestyle as a result of these life-changing procedures.
Tucson Lifestyle_Maltry_Feb 2014 "As the average age in the country continues to rise the demand for hip and knee replacement will follow," says Dr. Maltry.
"It is important to us to make sure our patients improve so we actually have them describe their functionality before and after surgery," says Dr. Maltry. "The goal is for patients to achieve a 60 percent improvement in their ability to complete simple movement such as walking, sitting, rising out of bed and standing up after sitting. Currently, 74 percent of patients who complete the surveys report an improvement of 60 percent or greater in functional movement.
The need for one hip or knee replacement does not influence the need for future joint replacements, notes Dr. Maltry.
