John Kalabus
Chattanooga Writers Guild John Kalabus John is a native of the State of New Jersey, where high school English classes first ignited in him an interest in writing. He is a navy veteran of the Vietnam conflict, which he followed with a long career in law enforcement. He has been a Municipal Police Officer in New Jersey, a US Border Patrol Agent in Arizona and New York, and an Immigration Special Agent in Detroit, Michigan. He retired in 1999. John is the reclusive sort, and prefers to spend most of his time alone in the mountains or in his workshop. He enjoys outdoor activities, particularly hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, and such as that. In addition to his writing, he does acrylic landscape paintings, and some woodworking. John is not as passionate or consumed with writing, as many writers are. Writing is simply another of his hobbies. He writes when the mood strikes him. He has kept a journal since 1969, and now has several large volumes full. He has written an autobiography that will someday be passed down to his family. He has also had articles published in Spaniels In The Field and Backwoodsman magazines. Since joining the Cleveland Group of the Chattanooga Writer's Guild John has been inspired to do more writing. He plans more magazine essays under his real name, but will use the pseudonym of Hiram Gale for planned novels in various genres. John is married and has four children and nine grandchildren. He, his wife Elizabeth, and their dog, Dixie currently reside east of Cleveland, Tennessee.
