John Harvill
Bass Tech
John Harvill began his experience with marching percussion because his parents did not have a babysitter for him the week they were going on a cruise. Rather than take him with them, his mother got him signed up late for the marching band's camp that week. With all the trombone spots on the field already taken, he was thrown into the front ensemble learning to play Beauty and the Beast while they sipped frozen daiquiris and shopped.??
He grew to love it and eventually took over as leader of his high school drumline in Mt. Juliet TN learning from wonderful teachers such as Paul Waters, Tony Cox, Rich O'Halloran as well as MCM alum and current Caption Head Shane Gwaltney. ??In 1995, when the original top bass drummer for MCM didn't show up for rehearsal two weeks before the 1st show, John got the call and remained there for the next six years. He served as the bass drum section leader in 1997, 1998 and in 2000 where he also served as the ensemble leader. While at MCM, John earned 3 World Championships in 96, 97, 98 as a marching member and went on to instruct the group from 2001-2003 earning another championship in 2001. ?
?John attended the Middle Tennessee University and was a member of the Band of Blue from 1996-1998 where he played snare in the fall and PAS drumline. John has also served as the snare/drumline section leader for The Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps from Canton Ohio. ??As an instructor/clinician/judge, his influence has been felt all over the United States and even Europe judging the European WGI Championships in 2008. John calls Father Ryan home and has been on the percussion staff there since 1997. ??
John works full time in Nashville with the YMCA is currently trying to find time be a dog owner again.
