John Morris Hargreaves was born in LaMoille, Ill., in 1901.He received his bachelor of arts degree from MacAlester College at St. Paul, Minn., in 1920 and his bachelor of science, bachelor of medicine and doctor of medicine degrees from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1924.He was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps Reserve July 23, 1924 and assigned to active-duty the following October.Hargreaves received his regular commission as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps Aug. 1, 1925 and was assigned at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, Calif. In 1926 he graduated from the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field, Texas, and was assigned to Sternberg General Hospital, Manila, Philippine Islands.In 1929 he became assistant chief, eye, ear, nose and throat department and chief, maxillo-facial section, Walter Reed General Hospital, Washington, D.C., and later became surgeon of the Eighth Pursuit Group at Langley Field, Va.He then served five years as director of the Department of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, School of Aviation Medicine, Randolph Field, Texas.In 1940 Hargreaves was appointed assistant to the Air Surgeon.From 1942 to 1945 he was chief surgeon, Air Technical Service Command, Wright Field, Ohio.In 1945 he became chief surgeon, Eighth Air Force on Okinawa, and in January 1946 became surgeon of Pacific Air Command, with headquarters at Manila and later Tokyo.In November 1946 he became deputy air surgeon Air Force headquarters.He was appointed surgeon of Continental Air Command, with headquarters at Mitchel Air Force Base, N.Y., in November 1949.Air Defense Command was reactivated Jan. 1, 1951 at Ent Air Force Base, Colo., and Hargreaves was appointed its air surgeon general.In July 1952 Hargreaves was transferred to Tokyo, Japan, as air surgeon, Far East Air Forces.He was assigned to the 566th USAF Hospital, Air Defense Command, at Hamilton Air Force Base, Calif., on Sept. 1, 1954.Hargreaves was awarded the Legion of Merit for service from July 1942 to July 1945 as surgeon, Air Service Command and surgeon, Air Technical Service Command; and the Bronze Star Medal for achievement as surgeon, Eighth Air Force in connection with military operations on Okinawa from Aug. 24, 1945, to Jan. 9, 1946.Hargreaves is an honor graduate of the Army Medical School, a graduate of the Medical Field Service School, an honor graduate of the School of Aviation Medicine and a graduate of the Command and General Staff School.He is a fellow of the American Medical Association.
