Political newcomer John Irving Halpern and former state Rep.

Halpern, a physician and medical director of the emergency department at Coral Springs Medical Center, has never run for public office. He said he decided to run for county commissioner when he noticed many of the nurses he works with started moving out of the state because of the rising cost of living in South Florida.
"My best nurses, the people I rely on, are leaving and going to North Carolina and Alabama," said Halpern, a Republican."My desire to run came from them."
Ritter and Halpern face each other for the commission seat that represents Parkland, Coral Springs, Tamarac and Sunrise.
Ritter and Halpern agree on at least one issue: lower taxes.
Halpern also is concerned about rising taxes and supports looking for alternative ways to continue lowering the county's tax rate.
Halpern, 48, worked as an administrator for New York City's medical services and was responsible for allocating emergency resources for city and county governments before moving to South Florida. He also served as a medical doctor for the U.S. Navy and ran a field hospital in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War in the early 1990s.
