Professor John Fisher Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor John Fisher has been appointed a Non-Executive Director of Marketing Leeds.
It is part of a major move to refocus and provide strategic leadership to Marketing Leeds as it moves forward with a broader role to attract inward investment and tourism.
Professor Fisher is a world-leading researcher in Medical Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and received a CBE for services to Biomedical Engineering in 2011. He leads the Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (iMBE), which was recently awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize.

Professor John Fisher from Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering at The University of Leeds has been speaking at the UK National Stem Cell Network Annual Science Meeting Heart valve in Nottingham about his team's research into how biological scaffolding will pave the way for off-the-shelf tissue transplants.
Professor Fisher and his colleague Professor Ingham have been working on ways of producing biological scaffolds, derived from natural human or animal tissues , such as vascular patches, meniscus (knee cartilage), and tendons that will not be rejected by a patient's immune system and can be repaired and renewed like normal tissue.

Professor Fisher said "If you take a natural tissue and strip off all of the donor's cells you're left with a biological scaffold made mostly of a protein called collagen, which is compatible with the patient receiving the scaffold.

Professor Fisher continued "These new biological scaffolds will provide off-the-shelf tissues for surgeons for repairing blood vessels after surgery for blocked arteries, for repairing meniscus after sporting injuries and cartilage tears, for repairing torn ligaments or tendons and for heart valve repair or replacement.

And a new generation of prosthetic hip and knee joints that last longer will avoid the need for further replacements, reducing the cost on the public purse in the long term," said Professor John Fisher, Director of the WELMEC Centre.
