Speaking at the launch, Iain Gray commented: “This funding is a fine example of the way in which Regener8, the Medical Technologies IKC and the N8 Research Partnership work together to foster innovation and encourage vital collaboration between industry and leading research-intensive universities here in the North of England.  Regenerative medicine is a key focus of the Technology Strategy Board’s extensive programme of activity to support innovation in the UK’s healthcare sector and we are delighted to support this initiative.” John Fisher, Executive Director of Regener8 and Director of the Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, University of Leeds commented: “By providing this funding we hope to encourage collaboration between the world leading research strengths of the N8 universities and the outstanding regenerative medicine companies in the North of England and in the UK in general.
Created by the Technology Strategy Board, the Cell Therapy Catapult will be a single, autonomous entity, nationally inclusive, independent of higher education institutions, and will play a significant role in speeding up development of cell therapies and accelerating routes to market. Professor John Fisher, Director of the Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, University of Leeds and Executive Director of Regener8 comments: “Regenerative medicine is a sector that is populated by many SMEs facing the challenges of translating emerging technologies in an environment of regulatory and strategic uncertainties.

One of the founders of Tissue Regenix, John is also Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leeds, director of the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Centre of Industrial Collaboration (BITECIC), and director of the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. John's expertise is in total replacement joints, artificial heart valves and soft tissue biomechanics. He is a key global opinion leader, consulting extensively at high levels with major multi-national orthopaedic and cardiovascular companies around the world, advising on new product development, and providing key input to global R&D strategies. John's track record in innovation and exploitation includes designer and inventor of Köhler Medical bioprosthetic heart valve portfolio, licensed in 1990 and currently with twelve years' clinical success, and designer and inventor of a ceramic-on-metal hip prosthesis licensed to DePuy Johnson and Johnson and now in the second year of clinical trials. Professor Fisher is a co-inventor of 10 patents, six of which have been successfully licensed.
