The annual meeting included a presentation by John Drexelius Jr., attorney with the Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Western New York, who gave an overview of the looming changes in the ways services are delivered to people with disabilities.
Citing the successful efforts of individuals with disabilities, family members and staff in lessening the impact of Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposed funding cuts in this year's state budget, Drexelius encouraged people to continue to advocate.

Attorney at Law John R. Drexelius, Jr. is an experienced attorney with a broad range of governmental, legal, political and administrative expertise and over 32 years of governmental experience. He served as Assistant County Attorney for Erie County Executive Edward Rutkowski, Assistant Attorney General for Attorney General Dennis Vacco, and counsel to several New York State Senators, including Walter J. Floss, John B. Sheffer, Mary Lou Rath and, most recently, Dale M. Volker. As senior advisor to Senator Volker for nearly 14 years, Mr. Drexelius took a leadership role in developing broad legislative agendas. Mr. Drexelius has given presentations on governmental advocacy to the leaders of the New York State Bar Association, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, the Developmental Disabilities Alliance of WNY, the Coalition against Family Violence and other not-for-profit advocacy organizations. He has also participated in numerous panel discussions with regional school board officials, health care and mental health care professionals and insurance professionals. As counsel to the New York State Senate Codes Committee, Mr. Drexelius drafted and negotiated various criminal justice changes, including the Sexual Assault Reform Act, Safe Harbour for Exploited Youth Act and the Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Act. Other legislative highlights of his career include the development of legislation creating the Roswell Park and Erie County Medical Center Public Authorities, the Great Lakes Protection Fund and the Buffalo Joint Schools Construction Board, and authorizing the construction of a new international bridge connecting Buffalo, New York with Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. He was the lead author of Senator Volker's 2004 Report, MEDICAID: Cause of an Erie County Fiscal Crisis or an Easy Answer for Hard Choices? Mr. Drexelius is a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Developmental Disability Alliance of WNY (DDAWNY), the Government Advisory Board of Canisius College, the Board of Directors of the Erie County Family Justice Center and the Holy Name Society of his local parish. He holds memberships in the New York State and Erie County Bar Associations and the Erie County Coalition against Family Violence. Mr. Drexelius resides in Kenmore New York, with his wife Margaret Wells, a librarian at the University at Buffalo, and their daughter.
