What: John Dankowski's program about Asian culture, focusing on Taiwan When: 3:30 p.m. Monday Where: Merritt Island Public Library, 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway Call: 455-1369 Talk" in English -- and a better name could not have been found for veteran teacher and experienced tour guide John Dankowski. His favorite topic, Asia, is a good fit, too.Dankowski, 72, lived and worked there for almost 40 years, teaching at the American School in Taipei, Taiwan, for most of his career.Asia, with a focus on Taiwan, will be the topic of his program at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Merritt Island Library."I loved overseas," Dankowski said."And I thought it would be fun to share some of my experiences."The discussion likely will be wide-ranging, because Dankowski has taught Asian culture, history and geography. He also taught the Mandarin dialect, and was fluent enough to write four dictionaries for his school. His introduction to the language came from the Air Force, which sent him to Yale University for Chinese studies in 1957.After his overseas assignment, he remained in Asia, with a few breaks for stateside jobs.Dankowski retired and moved to Merritt Island a year ago.He is a volunteer tour guide at the Kennedy Space Center. And he talks about Asia and Taiwan whenever he has a chance.
