Delaware Democratic Party Chairman John Daniello on the presidential races (3/2)

Delaware Democratic Party ... [cached]

Delaware Democratic Party Chairman John Daniello said in the letter that the number of people running for some positions is harming the party's chances of winning elections this fall, despite an advantage against Republicans in registration numbers. It was sent to candidates competing in several primary races in the state, county and Wilmington governments.

"I do not want to push any of you out of the race but I do want to make sure each of you has given a second and third thought to your candidacy. The Democratic Party has arduous (sic) slate of primaries ahead of it. There is absolutely no room for vanity campaigns, either statewide or local," Daniello wrote.
The field of Democratic hopefuls running for some statewide and local elections has ballooned over the last several months, with six candidates vying for the party's nomination in Lieutenant Governor race and five in the U.S. House contest. Eight candidates are currently running for mayor of Wilmington.
Daniello, who said in an interview that the letter was unprecedented for his time as chairman, pointed to State Rep.
Matt Meyer, a Democrat hoping to unseat New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon, said it was "absolutely inappropriate" for Daniello to send him the letter because the countywide race only has two candidates.

State Democratic Chairman ... [cached]

State Democratic Chairman John Daniello said the form letter was intended to express concern about the potential harm to nominees' chances in the general election that could result from having as many as six candidates on ballots seen across Delaware.

The message was delivered to more than 60 candidates running in primary contests throughout the state. Daniello wrote that there was no room in this year's election cycle for "vanity campaigns" in state or local races.
"Take a look. 'Are (you) running for the right reasons?' was really the basic message I gave them and not just seeing their name out there or not thinking it's some kind of lottery where they get their name on the ticket and seeing what happens," he said.
Although he didn't mention it once in the letter, the Daniello said the letter was intended to recognize next week's filing deadline.
Several other candidates disagreed with the message, with some accusing Daniello of discouraging newcomers from challenging established politicians.
Matt Meyer, a primary challenger to New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon, said it didn't make sense for him to receive the letter since he and Gordon are the only Democratic candidates who have filed.
"It's absolutely inappropriate for this letter to be sent to me," he said.
Daniello denied that the letter was targeted at any particular candidate.
"That letter went to everyone who had a primary, whether they were an incumbent or a non-incumbent, open seat or no open seat," he said.
