"It's a unique feeling," Colby said of returning to the school."This is not something that happens in my profession."Colby will officially begin as headmaster July 1.He previously held the position from 1994 to 1999.Colby succeeds William A Bugg III, who officially will resign June 30.When Colby left Byrnes in 1999, he went on to be the headmaster at Patrick Henry Academy in Estill, and is the headmaster at Aylett Country Day School in eastern Virginia.Colby said that after the board was informed of Bugg's departure from the school, he was contacted by a board member about the possibility of becoming headmaster of the school he served nearly a decade ago.Colby said returning to Byrnes wasn't something he was looking for.In fact, he said, he thought he would retire as the headmaster at Aylett Country Day School, but somehow everything fell into place."I was very happy, but the one thing I did miss was the high school kids," he said."My friends up there knew I missed dealing with the high school.Other than that, I was very happy."Aylett Country Day School only serves students from 3-year-old kindergarten through eighth grade.Colby said he and his wife, Ann, had decided they would move back to South Carolina to enjoy their retirement before being contacted by the Byrnes' board."We enjoyed our stay here in the Pee Dee the first time," he said."I've always enjoyed the children and families here.I think any time you've been some place you develop close ties."Colby said he couldn't wait to begin as headmaster so he could continue the academic excellence that was built before, during and after his term as headmaster."I think we continued the academic excellence and built on it," he said.Colby said one aspect of the school he is looking to improve is student enrollment."I think the board would like to see the enrollment grow some," he said."One of my goals is to increase the enrollment. An increase in enrollment would mean an increase in programs offered."Colby said he has grown as a headmaster since his first time at Byrnes and is a better headmaster now than he was 10 years ago.His educational experience spans some 40 years, having served as a teacher, dean of students, assistant headmaster and headmaster.Colby holds a bachelor's degree in history from Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee; a master's degree in history and education from the University of Mississippi; and a Master of Business Administration in management and marketing from Jacksonville University.Colby also has completed doctoral studies in history from the University of Florida."I know that Byrnes will be in great shape with John Colby in the lead," he said.
