Northborough is currently saving about $500,000 per year to pay future costs, but Town Administrator John Coderre implored members of the House and Senate on Monday to change the program for future retirees.
Currently, any employee who retires at 55 and has worked at least 20 hours per week for at least 10 years is eligible for retiree medical benefits from the town.
Town officials hope to see the state adopt a prorated health care benefit program, similar to a pension, which would be adjusted based on the hours worked per week, length of employment and age at retirement.
We have done everything that we can locally to solve the problem, Coderre said, and we just need the other piece of the pie here, which is reform.
