The Staten Island Zoo Board of Trustees has named John Caltabiano as director of the Zoo.
Caltabiano has been acting director of the Zoo since September 22, 2003.Mr. Caltabiano will guide us not only with the daily operation of the Zoo but with its program development, updating exhibit design, major construction projects, marketing and fund-raising efforts." "After an extensive search the Board of Trustees of the Staten Island Zoological Society was very grateful to offer the position of Director to John Caltabiano," added Frew.
Under Caltabiano the Zoo had many starts and completions including completing construction for the new Clydesdale Barn and corral and started preparation for a new contact/petting area for this coming spring.He also began and will complete the new Otter Exhibit which is scheduled to be opened in mid-March. He oversaw the building of a new hut for Sarah the cow; brought in emus as a new exhibit; and worked with City Councilman Michael McMahon to garner funds necessary to finally start the renovation of the Reptile Wing. Prior to his position at the Zoo, Caltabiano formed and has served as president & CEO of Calco Management Consultants, assisting, for the past 22 years, in hotel and property development and management.In addition to normal day to day operations, these services have included food and beverage management, sales and marketing, financial analysis and risk management. Most recently Caltabiano spearheaded the development and management of the 148 room Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center, Bloomfield, and has since consulted to the Staten Island Hotel's food and beverage operations. Caltabiano's professional accomplishments include working with the Hemisphere Hotel Chain.He developed and implemented financial and accounting procedure, property management programs, risk management, market analysis, construction management, corporate expansion programs and niche marketing.The Hemisphere Hotel Chain included: The Woodbridge Hilton; The Clark Ramada Hotel; The East Windsor Hilton and National Conference Center; The Tinton Falls Hilton and the Williamsburg Hilton & National Conference Center, Virginia.Caltabiano is a graduate of Pace University.He was a consultant to the New York University MBA Program for Accounting and Finance Majors.A Staten Island resident, he lends his support to numerous philanthropic ventures including as member of the South Shore Rotary Club of Staten Island, former member of the Board of Trustees of Staten Island Zoological Society, Executive Board of Directors of the Staten Island Chapter of the Boy Scouts of America; former President of Rainbow's Hope, Inc. and director of The Miss Staten Island Scholarship Pageant. Caltabiano is married to Patricia, founder and executive director of World of Women SI, Inc.
John Caltabiano will work to increase the influence of the only commercial bank headquartered on Staten Island.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - John Caltabiano, a Staten Island businessman and avid community volunteer, recently joined Victory State Bank as vice president of business development.
In his new role at the only commercial bank headquartered on Staten Island, Caltabiano will work to enhance Victory State's community impact by continuing his role as a highly valued participant in local affairs and social-services organizations.
"John is a well-established member of the Staten Island community and is well-known to the professionals and business owners on the Island," said Ralph M. Branca, president and CEO of Victory State Bank.
"John brings a unique perspective to our bank, having worked in both the public and not-for-profit arenas.

Caltabiano's long and distinguished career includes a wealth of experience, combining property operations, financial management, sales and marketing, strategic planning and risk management in both the hospitality and commercial real-estate industries.
"It is great being back in the private sector again, working for a wonderful organization such as Victory State Bank," said Caltabiano, who in February concluded a seven-year stint as executive director of the Staten Island Zoo.
"In a very short time, everyone here has made me feel right at home.
I hope to bring an added dimension to the bank with the skills and experience I have developed over the past 30 odd years."
Caltabiano had served earlier in the decade as hotel-division vice president for The Nicotra Group LLP, assisting in the development and management of the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomfield.
In 1990, he and his wife, Patti, founded Calco Management Group LLC, Annadale, a marketing consulting firm, which continues to run under their direction.

Caltabiano is president-elect of the South Shore Rotary Club; a past-president and board member of Rainbow's Hope; an Executive Board member of the Staten Island Council, Boy Scouts of America, and a former director of the Miss Staten Island Scholarship Pageant.He and his wife, Patti, reside in Annadale.
New South Shore Rotary President provides agenda for 2011, praises previous administration
After congratulating Immediate Past President Dean Balsamini and other club members for accomplishing a variety of successful community fund-raisers despite a difficult economic climate, new South Shore Rotary President John Caltabiano discussed some of the organization's fund-raising ambitions for the coming year.
Caltabiano said the club's goals for 2011 include: Participation and leadership in the Rotary International Parent/Child Aids Program, spearheaded by the renowned Dr. Stephen Nicholas; continuation of support to U.S. troops overseas and at home; involvement in Siller Foundation fund-raising efforts; sponsorship of the annual South Shore Rotary musical show, facilitated by Al Lambert; the staging of a "lobster fest" fund-raiser; continued sponsorship of the annual Hungerford School Holiday Party and Prom, and other community-minded initiatives
