John Bell

John Bell
John was raised in Knoxville, TN, but didn't discover his love of the outdoors until after moving to Atlanta in 1994. His outdoor adventures began with day-hiking short sections of the AT. One day several years ago, he happened across a group of rock climbers, while hiking at Rocktown. Intrigued, yet apprehensive, he reluctantly signed up for a three day rock climbing course, and the rest is history. Since then, he's been climbing all over the Southeast and has discovered an even deeper love for the bigger mountains out West with several successful summit climbs including The Grand Teton, Long's Peak and Mt. Rainier.

Trip Leader John L
John, a North Florida native, has lived in Atlanta since 1997. John isn't afraid to try most things at least once (although you can probably rule out sky diving). An avid fisherman and surfer, John loves anything water related. Moving to Atlanta was a bit of an adjustment for him, as he felt landlocked.
John nearly moved away from Atlanta in 2011, but decided to stay and thankfully discovered the AOC. He joined the AOC in December 2011 and hit the ground running, participating in 4 events in 4 straight days...including the popular Hash Race on New Year's Day. John enjoys hiking, biking, caving, backpacking, rafting and fishing...and is also an avid pool player if you ever dare to challenge him to a game at one of our AOC socials. He is also an avid BBQ connoisseur. He has recently taken up road biking and running as part of his training regiment for triathlon's. He hopes to complete an Ironman one day down the road. For now, John says it's all about seeing new places, staying fit and meeting new friends.
John is part labrador; he smiles a lot and can't resist the urge to jump in the water. Expect lots of water hikes and anything that gets the adrenaline pumping. He attempts to make his trips motorcycle-friendly so AOC members can ride to the event when possible.
John worked in the dot-com industry in New York City, only to realize that he wanted to be a goody-two-shoes and help people. He moved to Americus, GA to work for Habitat for Humanity. In between his for-profit life in New York and his non-profit life in Georgia, he took a six month, solo motorcycle journey from New Jersey to Panama and back. He learned enough language skills to speak broken Spanish and enough mechanical skills to break his motorcycle.
In 2006, he finally made his way back to a large city, Atlanta. He joined the AOC in 2008 and said, "These are my people. He grew impressed with the caliber of trip leaders, and he felt honored to become a part of this group.

Visiting: Maureen Berry, Andy Semans, John Bell

Habitat for Humanity: John Bell, Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity, addressed the Board to request that the neighborhood assist with financial and volunteer support to build a home at 1311 Fargo Street.Habitat builds homes by "partnering" families in need of housing with construction volunteers and financial support.
Bell said that to sponsor a home, an organization needs to raise $30,000 toward the $54,000 construction cost.He stressed that Habitat homes are not given, the partnering family receives a mortgage at 0% interest and pays anywhere from $272 to $416 per month to eventually own the home.Volunteer labor accounts for 80% of the total labor to build a house. The partnering families contribute 15% through mortgage payments, government funding accounts for 30% and charitable contributions cover 55%.In addition to helping this family, Bell said it's advantageous to Forest Hills to support owner-occupied housing in the disadvantaged neighborhood immediately to our east.Bell said he is applying for a $5,000 matching grant from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.
After Bell left, the Board discussed the proposal.
