Powell Fire Chief Joey Darrah also advises soaking adjacent areas to prevent the fire going out of control, staying with the fire to monitor it and having plenty of water on hand while burning in case something unexpected happens, such as a change in the wind direction.

Pyrotechnics start at around 10 p.m., and last about 20 minutes, said Fire Chief Joey Darrah. To view the fireworks, head east on South Street (Lane 9) and take a right on Road 7. Fire department personnel will be there to direct traffic. The fireworks cost around $10,000. The department obtains money to buy fireworks from area businesses, door-to-door solicitations and by asking folks at the gate for contributions, Darrah said. The department's fireworks staging area is now on city-owned property to avoid any potential problems with nearby landowners, Darrah said. There will be signs at the public parking lot/viewing area stating, "No fireworks," and "Enter at your own risk." Darrah is concerned about folks bringing their own fireworks. In the past, forbidden fireworks have presented a hazard to people who come to enjoy the department's show, not to be bombarded with errant bottle rockets. "It's like a war zone out there," Darrah said.
