But Joel Romo, senior director of government relations at the American Heart Association, said that employees shouldn't have to make that choice.

"People shouldn't be forced to jeopardize their health for a paycheck," Romo said.
He said public opinion polls show that 70 percent of Texans are in favor of a smoking ban, and added that it would mean substantial savings to the state in health care costs.
Would save money
A study conducted for Smoke-Free Texas shows that the state would save $404 million biennially from a smoking ban, particularly because of health problems related to secondhand smoke.
Romo also said businesses in cities in Texas where a smoking ban is already in place, such as El Paso, Houston and Austin, have seen mixed beverage receipts increase.
"Bar owners saw an increase in their revenue," Romo said.
