Joel Morgovsky Welcome to the Reading Pictures Website.Reading Pictures is the name for a systematic approach for looking at photographs in a new and immersive way. It is based on Professor Morgovsky's larger sphere of research called PhotoPsychology, which describes both the historical relationships between psychology and photography and the psychological underpinnings of the art of photography. Click on the Reading Pictures tab (above) to learn more. A sample Reading Pictures exercise, "Inner Visions", is located under the Publications tab.
Professor Morgovsky is a frequent lecturer and judge at photographic societies, artists collectives and art centers throughout the tri-state region. A listing of topics in his current lecture series is located under the Lecture tab above.
Professor Morgovsky is a member of the Soho Photo Gallery in New York City and is Chair of the Gallery's 19th Annual National Juried Competition. Enjoy the announcement below.

Joel Morgovsky retired as Professor of Psychology at Brookdale Community College after 41 wonderful years. In the last 5 years of his teaching career he created and taught Positive Psychology as a 3-credit, college level course. It was the first Positive Psychology course in NJ Higher Ed. Click the "Visit the Happiness Cafe" link (in red, below) to experience a humorous video about famous positive psychologists made by Prof. Morgovsky and Dr. Dan Tomasulo.

Professor Morgovsky's academic background encompasses more than 35 years as a successful educator and academic leader. Recognized both locally and nationally as a master teacher and outstanding colleague, he is highly sought after by students and staff alike. He has been honored by his students three times as an Outstanding Teacher through Who's Who in American Education. An author of important educational software (Psych Now! Thompson Education), he has also provided leadership to the Academic Computing Council at his institution. He is a pioneer in designing and teaching sections Introduction to Psychology II online at his college. An outstanding lecturer, Professor Morgovsky has addressed many national conferences on topics as diverse as educational technology and the psychological significance of photographs. Most recently, he presented at the Annual Conference of the American Psychological Association in Hawaii, and the annual Colloquia of the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College. Professor Morgovsky has chaired several major committees such as the General Education Committee, Academic Computing Council, College Governance, and the Portfolio Review Committee at Soho Photo Gallery. He has served as Chairman of the Psychology Department twice and two terms as Division Chair for Social Sciences. As Advisor for the Brookdale Community College chapter of Psi Beta, the National Honor Society in Psychology for Two-Year colleges, Professor Morgovsky was recognized as the 2005 Virginia Staudt Sexton Outstanding Chapter Advisor. The Brookdale chapter of Psi Beta was also recognized as the 2005 Wadsworth Publishers Outstanding Psi Beta Chapter. Professor Morgovsky is Chair of the Committee on Psychology and Photography for Division 1 of the American Psychological Association.
