Joel Morgovsky, Lincroft, NJ, USA,has been Professor of Psychology at Brookdale Community College since 1971, specializing in General, Social and Positive Psychology.
He is also a specialist in "Photopsychology", which is the study of intersections between psychology and photography and developer of a system for interacting with photographs called "Reading Pictures". A senior member of the Soho Photo Gallery in New York City, Joel has been an exhibiting photographer in black-and-white, darkroom colour and digital since 1977. A presenter on historical and contemporary interactions between photography and psychology at the Eastern Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association ("APA") annual meetings since 2006, he has also published articles in the Review of General Psychology and the APA Monitor on Psychology. As Chairman of the Committee on Psychology and Photography for Division 1 of the APA, he organized and curated an exhibition entitled "Psychologists in Focus: An Exhibition of Photographs by Psychologists," shown at four venues across the country. In addition, he is a frequent lecturer and judge at camera clubs throughout the Tri-State area and is on the Speaker's list of the New Jersey Federation of Camera Clubs. While his work does not focus directly on therapeutic uses of photography, he does include these in his survey of photopsychology.

Welcome to the Reading Pictures Website.Reading Pictures is the name for a systematic approach for looking at photographs in a new and immersive way. It is based on Professor Morgovsky's larger sphere of research called PhotoPsychology, which describes both the historical relationships between psychology and photography and the psychological underpinnings of the art of photography. Click on the Reading Pictures tab (above) to learn more. A sample Reading Pictures exercise, "Inner Visions", is located under the Publications tab. Professor Morgovsky is a frequent lecturer and judge at photographic societies, artists collectives and art centers throughout the tri-state region. A listing of topics in his current lecture series is located under the Lecture tab above. Professor Morgovsky is a member of the Soho Photo Gallery in New York City and is Chair of the Gallery's 19th Annual National Juried Competition. Enjoy the announcement below. Joel Morgovsky retired as Professor of Psychology at Brookdale Community College after 41 wonderful years. In the last 5 years of his teaching career he created and taught Positive Psychology as a 3-credit, college level course. It was the first Positive Psychology course in NJ Higher Ed.
