Dr. Joel J. Laury, an allergist at Horizon Medical Corp. on West Olive Street, said the month of May, when the tree and grass seasons overlap, is typically the worst for people with allergies. The early onset of spring probably won't alter the pattern, he said.
He expects this May to be "crazy busy."
"The deal is you can never win," Dr. Laury said.

Dr. Laury said the people can limit their exposure to pollen by staying indoors and keeping their doors and windows closed. Although it is something neither he nor his patients have any control over, rain can also provide some relief, he said.

"We start with over-the-counter because, honestly, no one comes to me without having tried them all first," he said.

For his part, Joel Laury, M.D., a board-certified allergist and immunologist with Horizon Medical Group in Scranton, cautions asthma sufferers not to move when an area's ranking worsens.
Besides air quality and pollen counts, he reminds concerned patients the list is based on a metro area's poverty and uninsured rates and its specialist count, which asthma sufferers can't control.
Laury also wishes the asthma foundation would give Pennsylvania cities credit for the statewide smoking ban, which had several exemptions, enacted last year. The foundation only improves a metro area's ranking in that category if a state or municipalities pass a full smoking ban.
Plus, patients shouldn't fear asthma medications when they see newspaper headlines about negative studies, Laury said. He said asthma drugs are safe when used and prescribed responsibly under doctor supervision.
