CROWLEY - Notre Dame running back Joe Dave Petitjean is healthy again and that was sickening news for the Crowley Gents Friday night.Petitjean
, hampered early in the season by a hyper-extended knee, returned to his
2006 form Friday night, rushing for a season-high 190 yards and leading the No. 1-ranked Pios to a 20-7 District 5-3A victory over the Gents.
, who had 153 yards a week earlier against Rayne, was at his
very best Friday, especially in the second half, which was fortunate for the Pios who found themselves once again locked in grueling battle against their cross-town rivals.
Limited to 67 yards on 15 carries in the first half, Petitjean
rushed for 59 yards alone on a pivotal 68-yard drive to open the second half. That drive, which took 16 plays, saw the Pios convert two fourth downs and ate up 8 minutes and six seconds, ended on a 2-yard run by Petitjean
That broke a 7-7 halftime deadlock and lifted the Pios ahead 14-7.Petitjean
rushed for 123 yards in the second half, helping the Pios keep the ball away from a Crowley offense which moved the ball consistently throughout the game.
"We have a lot of running backs hurt now and I know the team is depending on me," said Petitjean
, who carried 36 times on the night.
