This has not only been the motto of the 1999 Beaver football squad , it has been the philosophy fourth-year Head Football Coach Joe Hadachek
has lived by during his
era here at Buena Vista University
On Wednesday , that era ended
Our Head Football Coach Joe Hadachek
is stepping down..
privately broke the news to the players on Tuesday night.
...Hadachek came to BVU four seasons ago with one goal : to bring excitement and a winning tradition to Beaver football
has reached this goal faster than most thought possible.
arrival , Hadachek
found a team that struggled to win two games the year before.Yet , through a lot of blood , sweat and tears , he
has crafted a coaching staff and a team who have once again established themselves in the Iowa Conference.
Under the direction of Hadachek
, the Beaver offense has gained long-awaited muscle and developed increased depth. The offensive output has leaped nearly one hundred yards per game , from 283.8 yards per game in 1996 , to an average of 379.1 this season.Hadachek's
overall record at BVU
With the revamped offense , scoring has also jumped from 20.1 points per game in 1996 to 30.9 in his
final season , in a ferociously competitive Iowa Conference.
has always been a guy that would give up anything and make any sacrifice to give his
team the opportunity to achieve all that was humanly possible. This , however , was something that he
just couldn't do anymore.
At this stage in my career , I want more time with my family and to pursue my business interests , Hadachek
said at the press conference.
When I sat down with him personally , he
elaborated on this even more.
While at a coaching conference in Ohio last summer , he
rode in an elevator with Jim McNally , who is the offensive line coach for the New York Giants and a long-time hero of Hadachek
McNally's son turned to him and asked when his
birthday was , and he
did not know.
Right there my brain started thinking , ‘What am I doing?' Hadachek said.
I'm just going through the motions , and that's why , Hadachek
I love coming to practice , but instead of ( juniors ) Brian Davis and Kurt Boustead playing catch with my sons , I want to play catch with my sons , Hadachek
For the coach that has known only to give himself totally and without equivocation , there finally came a moment of truth. He
was faced with a decision between the career and the players that he
has loved for 14 years , or the wife and budding family that he
will always love and be loved by.
They're sheddin' a few tears too , Hadachek
said of his
family. My wife has not pressured me into this situation.I did make the decision. If I was saying it was an easy decision , I'd be lying to you.It was a very , very difficult decision and one that I had to put a lot of thought into...I will carry on..
When asked to describe Hadachek
in one word , many of his
players said intense , special or a leader.
Giving…I would say giving , because that's all he's
done and that's why he's
leaving because he
doesn't feel like he
can give enough to his
family while he's
giving to us as a family…the team , Boustead said. That's probably the one thing the guy is , someone that's willing to give up anything to either make the commitment to the team or make the commitment to his
family and he's
obviously shown that he'll give up anything to make his
commitment to his
At the end of the players' meeting on Tuesday , an emotional Hadachek walked out of the room as the players stood up , without a word , and gave their coach a standing ovation. This simple dignified act showed the character and class Hadachek has instilled in his
players , and the admiration and respect they have for him.
A lot of times I might not show a lot of emotion , as far as a softer side , but , that one got me , Hadachek
They ( Advocare ) deal with world-class nutritional products that help people lose weight , gain energy or increase performance , and that's something I've always had an interest in , Hadachek
As for a successor to Hadachek
, Director of Athletics Jan Travis talked of how they will post the job opening for a week but will also be looking internally for Hadachek's replacement , with him aiding in the process.
I've been blessed to have input with Fred and Jan , Hadachek
said.I can't disclose who that will be but as a staff we've agreed on what would be in the best interest of the staff to take the next step..
As I was talking with Hadachek
for what may be the last time , his
door opened at the end of the interview and his
son Trevor walked in.
This symbolized the opening of a new door for Hadachek
and a new focus for his
energies.Though the door may be closing on his
career at BVU
memory , influence and dedication will last.
Other players added their feelings about Hadachek
has always shown class , taken pride and displayed character in everything he's
done , and has proven himself as a winner.
President Moore may have put it best when he
said very simply , Joe…We're gonna miss you..
