Joe Deer (Director) is a proud Resident Artist with The Human Race Theatre Company and has directed a dozen shows here, including Avenue Q, Seussical, Big River and Lend Me a Tenor.He is the Distinguished Professor of Musical Theatre at Wright State University where he is head of the BFA Musical Theatre program and Director of The Musical Theatre Initiative.Joe also works closely with Muse Machine here in Dayton and is active internationally as a director, choreographer, master teacher and scholar.
He is the author of Acting in Musical Theatre (co-author, Rocco Dal Vera), Directing in Musical Theatre and dozens of articles.
In a past life, he was an actor, dancer and stage manager on Broadway and on tour in shows such as Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes, Singin' in the Rain, The Music Man and The American Dancemachine.Joe is also the newest inductee to the Dayton Theatre Hall of Fame and is happy to call Dayton his home.

As a native, it is always fun to return to Dayton, and a pleasure to work with this exciting company and especially Joe Deer.
Dick's work has been seen at the Virginia Stage Company, Starlight Productions in Pittsburgh, the Weston Playhouse in Vermont, the Pittsburgh Public Theatre and the McCarter Theatre in New Jersey.
New York credits include Conrack for AMAS (nominated for an AUDELCO Award), Fascinatin' Rhythms, a tour for Columbia Artists and a new play, Wilson.
He is co-author of Scene Design and Stage Lighting, soon to be in its 10th edition.
He currently serves as the Associate Head of the School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University and is a member of United Scenic Artists.He received his MFA from Northwestern University.

Joe Deer (Director/Choreographer) is so pleased to return to The Human Race Theatre Company, a place he is proud to call his professional artistic home.
This is Joe's tenth production with this company, some favorites of which include The 39 Steps, Seussical, Lend Me a Tenor and Big River.
He is a Resident Artist with The Race and has served on their Board of Trustees for six years.Joe spends much of the rest of his time as Distinguished Professor of Musical Theatre at Wright State University, where he was recently honored with the Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence.
Joe works regularly as a director at theatres including West Virginia Public Theatre, New Stage Collective, Mountain Playhouse, Struthers Library Theatre (artistic director for four seasons) and for Muse Machine (Crazy For You).He will travel to London, England next year to direct for the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
Joe is the author of the forthcoming Directing in Musical Theatre: An Essential Guide and Acting in Musical Theatre: A Comprehensive Course (co-author Rocco Dal Vera), both published by Routledge.
Joe has recently been named Director of The Musical Theatre Initiative at Wright State University, and looks forward to helping enrich the national conversation on this subject that he loves so much.

Joe Deer has been an international theatre and dance educator for nearly thirty years.He began his teaching career in New York City at Steps Studio, Dance Theatre of Harlem, The American Dancemachine Training Facility and many regional studios.Joe holds an MFA in Directing from Carnegie Mellon University and is Distinguished Professor of Musical Theatre at Wright State University (Dayton, OH), where he is head of the BFA Musical Theatre program and Director of The Musical Theatre Initiative.He was founding President of the Musical Theatre Educators Alliance and continues to work actively with the Educational Theatre Association, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and many regional arts education organizations.He is a frequent guest artist and master teacher at institutions including the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (London, England), Danish Academy of Musical Theatre, Stage School (Hamburg, GE), Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama (Wales) and many of the top training programs in the US, including Carnegie Mellon University, North Carolina School of the Arts, University of Cincinnati - College Conservatory of Music, Shenandoah University, and others.Joe is also the award-
winning director or choreographer of over a hundred-
fifty productions in theatres from Off-
Broadway to regional, summer stock and university stages.
He recently made his London debut directing and choreographing THE BAKER'S WIFE.
For four seasons Joe was Artistic Director of Struthers Library Theatre.He was also a resident director and choreographer at Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown, PA for ten seasons, staging almost thirty plays and musicals.He continues to work actively as a freelance director and choreographer at theatres throughout the US, including West Virginia Public Theatre, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma and New Stage Collective in Cincinnati, OH
"The 39 Steps," directed by Joe Deer, Wright State's head of Musical Theatre, and adapted by Patrick Barlow from Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film, will play at the Loft Theatre from October 21 - November 7.
