Deputy Connolly was awarded the Sheriff's Medal of Valor and the Purple Heart on Thursday for his actions on Jan. 14, 2007, when he was working a minor accident on the east U.S. 380 bridge that had iced over, causing extremely hazardous driving conditions. As he attempted to escort a woman out of harm's way, a pickup truck began sliding toward them, putting them in peril of being crushed between it and another vehicle.
