heraldsun.com: Orange, Chatham might get new judge

District 15-B now has four district court judges -- Chief Judge Joe Buckner, Charles Anderson, Alonzo Coleman and Pat DeVine.

...
In 2005, the judges handled some 9,000 non-vehicle criminal misdemeanors and 1,500 to 1,600 driving-while-impaired cases in District 15-B, Buckner said.
District court judges typically preside over a wide range of cases: first appearances, DWIs, traffic violations, criminal misdemeanors, some non-trial felony cases, bond and probable-cause hearings, bond forfeitures, some civil lawsuits, divorces, custody and visitation, child and spousal support and domestic violence protection orders.
They also hear cases of child abuse and neglect filed by the county departments of social services, hospital commitment hearings for people with mental illness and substance-abuse issues, and small-claims appeals.
Buckner, who is president of the Conference of District Court Judges, said Monday the conference polled each of the judicial districts this past year and asked officials whether they needed a new judge now, whether they needed a new judge but not immediately or whether they didn't need a new judge at all.
"We ended up with 16 districts that requested 19 judges," Buckner said.
After they received the results, the conference's leaders compared them to rankings compiled by the Administrative Office of the Courts on which judicial districts needed an additional judge, then came up with a list of priorities, he said.District 15-B made the cut.
"We're thrilled to have a new judge," said Buckner, who often looks out on courtrooms full of hundreds of people awaiting their time before the judge.
The funding for the new Orange-Chatham judge won't be available until January 2007, he added.
The governor will appoint the new judge. In the past, when there was a new judgeship, the District 15-B Bar nominated three candidates, and the governor then chose the new judge from those candidates, Buckner said.
...
Buckner said that, after the appointment in 2007, the new judge for the district likely would have to run for election in 2008.
