With that in mind, dentist Joanne O'Riordan held a Halloween fun 'Check-up Party Day' at her dental surgery in Church Street, Cavan last week.
There was a puppet show staged for the children in the waiting room of O'Riordan's
Dental surgery and the Tooth Fairy made an appearance.
"Studies show that 72% of adults who have developed anxiety about going to the dentist, developed that from a bad childhood experience in a dental surgery," said Joanne O'Riordan
The main aim according to Joanne
is to remove that fear barrier and create a positive association.
"The second aim when seeing young children is to educate them and their parents about the proper way to brush their teeth, proper diet and having six-month check-up with the dentist," said Joanne
The children were also shown how to brush their teeth on the day and the Tooth Fairy also used the plaque disclosing tablets to show how much plaque can be lodged on teeth.
The tablet actually dyes all the plaque pink, to clearly illustrate it.
Having graduated from a sedation course during the summer, Joanne
is now even more aware of how anxious some people can be when visiting the dentist.
"Since I started doing sedation, people have come forward who have not been to the dentist for 20 years - many of their teeth are decayed and they have suffered silently at home
," said Joanne O'Riordan
pointed out that her
prices are on a par with the North.
"We are continuing to keep prices down," she
The children were so pre-occupied with the fun they were having and the new friends they were making, they forgot any fears or apprehension they felt . Joanne
, Peter and Sarah educated parents on the causes of tooth decay and dietary advice.

In order to compete with the dentists in Northern Ireland, Joanne O'Riordan
has reduced her
prices right across the board for all procedures at her
proactive in Church Street
"We are now definitely as cheap as any practice in the North, if not cheaper than some," claimed Joanne O'Riordan
added that they are happy with the financial return in their practice and she
simply can't comprehend how some other dentists here in the Republic are charging double her
prices for some procedures.
has a full price list for all procedures on the practice website and she
notes that some other dentists are not willing to disclose their prices over the phone or produce a price list.
says it is only fair to the public to have all fees charged readily available to them.
"Everyone is willing to haggle and barter nowadays in this economic climate and the same should apply to dentistry," she
told The Anglo-Celt
that for the last number of years medical cards patients were entitled to all routine treatment free of charge including examinations, scale and polishes, dentures, root treatments, fillings and extractions.
"Now at this stage all they are entitled to is emergency treatment, two fillings per year in an emergency situation.
They are allowed as many extractions as they wish as extractions are not limited.
This is not good for oral health or for the patients in general.
We like to save and conserve teeth as much as possible," said Ms. O'Riordan
Essentially the effect of current government's controls on the medical card scheme means that the people of Ireland can walk around toothless and there will not be any funding under the scheme for dentures.
has patients on the books who had front teeth extracted in the last few weeks since this law came into effect and they now simply can't afford to have dentures placed.
This avoids people getting a shock when they go to pay at reception of their completed procedures," said Joanne
Tooth whitening is proving very popular at present and Joanne
believes that it should no longer be just an aspiration.
Zoom Laser bleaching costs €395 at the practice.
Having recently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation at Trinity College Dublin
, Dr Joanne O'Riordan
is now trained to provide intravenous and "Happy air" sedation techniques.
In the last 12 months, with behaviour management and conscious sedation techniques hundreds of anxious patients have been treated at Church Street Dental
and Implant Clinic.
