Joan Stiles is Professor of Cognitive Science. She received her PhD in Cognitive Psychology at Princeton University, and was awarded an NIH New Investigator to complete a three year program of training in Neurosciences at UCSD. She is author of a forthcoming book, The fundamentals of Brain Development: Integrating Nature and Nurture (Harvard Press, January 2008), that is intended as an in depth introduction to brain development for non-biologists. Her work encompasses three quite different, but related programs of inquiry.

A more scientific reason for optimism is found on YouTube in a lecture on the brain's development by Dr. Joan Stiles, a professor in the cognitive research department on the San Diego campus of the University of California. Titled "Grey Matters, From Molecules to Mind " it is mostly about the physical growth and organization of the emergent brain. However, she offers evidence that the environment interacts with and stimulates the growth and functioning of the brain and, arguably, continues to do so throughout our adult life.

Joan Stiles, Ph.D.,received her doctorate degree in Cognitive Psychology with a specialization in Development from Princeton University in 1983.In July of 1983, she arrived at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) as an Assistant Professor of Psychology.Soon after arriving at UCSD, she received a career development award that allowed her to obtain an additional five years of intensive training in neuroscience. In 1995, she moved to the Department of Cognitive Science where she am currently Professor of Cognitive Science. In the 1990s, she became involved in the establishment of a large interdisciplinary initiative in Human Development. In 1994, she founded with colleagues Professors Carol Padden and Judith Goodman the UCSD Human Development Program (HDP), an interdisciplinary undergraduate major. In 2000, she and Professor Mark Appelbaum founded the Center for Human Development (CHD), an interdisciplinary research unit. She has served as Director for both HDP and CHD since their inceptions. Her research examines spatial cognitive processes in typically developing children and children with various neurodevelopmental disorders.A particular focus in her laboratory has been the study of effects of prenatal stroke on the development of spatial cognitive abilities.Over a decade ago, she began exploring the relationship between behavior and brain function by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI).Neuroimaging techniques such as FMRI enable documentation of developmental change in patterns of brain activation associated with specific spatial processing activities. These new methodologies have provided important new tools for addressing fundamental questions about the relationship between behavioral and brain development in both typical and atypical populations of children.Recently, she and members of her laboratory have also begun a series of studies focused on understanding changes in basic brain physiology and anatomy.
