Waiting, wondering, worrying about war

www.tucsoncitizen.com [cached]

Joan DiGiovanni, a visiting professor of psychology at the University of Arizona, said the general reluctance of people to discuss their fears makes the problem worse.

"We don't encourage people to talk about their feelings of mortality and we're all vulnerable," said DiGiovanni, who created a course on the psychology of terrorism that is not yet part of the UA curriculum.
"People need to be able to communicate with each other and if they are having chronic stress and chronic anxiety, they need to seek professional help," she said."Otherwise they isolate themselves and think they're the only ones feeling this."
DiGiovanni believes the general sense of anxiety over war with Iraq will begin to subside once the fighting begins.
"Right now there's this indefinite state and if war starts, we will somewhat re-establish control," she said.
But if the war is prolonged, that sense of control is bound to slip away again, she said.
