Welcome, Dr. Jimmy G. Tharpe!, 11 June 2006 [cached]
Welcome, Dr. Jimmy G. Tharpe!
Today we welcome Dr. Jimmy G. Tharpe. Recently I was with Dr. Tharpe when he was celebrating his 50 th anniversary with Baptist Tabernacle in Shreveport, Louisiana. He is founder of Baptist Christian College and Louisiana Baptist University. In 1969 I began my first year of college and Dr. Tharpe, our president made a lasting impression on me. It was in the Fall Bible Conference that the Lord began to seriously deal with me about the ministry. By March, 1970 I had surrendered to preach. I announced my call at Baptist Tabernacle and my pastor, Dr. Tharpe, who along with my father (Missions Director and professor) proffered me the blessing of God. Immediately God began to use me in revival meetings, youth revivals, Bible and Mission Conferences. The last of my teen years and beginning of my 20s was an exciting time in my life. The blessings, to God be the glory, were nothing short of phenomenal. Although I went from there to serve the Lord in one of the largest churches in America, I shall never forget the formative years with Dr. Tharpe. God used Dr. Tharpe to influence so many young lives. Allow me to take a few minutes of your time to tell you how Dr. Jimmy Tharpe was used of God to influence me. He taught me to:
1. Preach with enthusiasm.
Dr. Tharpe entered the pulpit with knowledge, wisdom and dignity. Throughout his message he never lost his knowledge and wisdom, but before the message was over he had managed to lose his dignity. And I say this to compliment him. He usually wore a dark conservative suit, highly polished shoes, and every hair on his head in place. Before the sermon was over, however, his hair had often swayed onto his forehead, he had unbuttoned his top shirt button, and he had sweat through his suit. He would remind one of the kind of preacher President Lincoln said he enjoyed.
Dr. Tharpe - or as he was most affectionately referred to by his congregates, "Brother Jimmy" - has always been willing to go the extra mile with anybody.
This could be said of Dr. Tharpe as well.
I don't know if I've ever met anybody that enjoyed a good laugh better than Dr. Tharpe. He looked for humor in everything and seemed to have a knack for finding it. Although he had a fantastic sense of humor, he took sinning against God very seriously. When it came to wrongdoing, he never compromised.
But pretty soon Dr. Tharpe would get his second wind and - look out! - here he comes with a plan and another great dream!
No matter how dark the day, Brother Jimmy looked for the silver lining behind every cloud. And when events of the moment would not seem to lift others, he would often encourage others with his preaching of the return of the Lord. When he preaches about the rapture his countenance brightens, his voice becomes elated and the awareness of Christ presence is obvious. He taught all to know that things were gong to be "picking up" no matter what we go through. "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout...Wherefore comfort one another with these words" (I Thessalonians 4:16, 18).
We welcome one of my mentors and great friends of a lifetime, Dr. Jimmy G. Tharpe!
Drummond degree phony, 8 Feb 2006 [cached]
According to James Thorpe, president of the Baptist Christian College, the administrationdenied Drummond a non-accredited Ph.D. degree in education on May 17, 1982, whenfaculty members raised questions about "his character."
Thorpe said Drummond was listed as a student at the time at the Sacramento Baptist College in Citrus Heights, Calif., an extension of Baptist Christian College.
"Certain faculty members met and decided that they could not proceed with graduation exercises due to his character," said Thorpe in a telephone interview Tuesday.
Thorpe added that when questions emerged about Drummond just prior to the1982 graduation exercises, the administration examined his credentials and discovered they had no evidence that Drummond received a bachelor's or master's degree, he said.
"You can't get a Ph.D. from this institution or any other one I know about without first obtaining a bachelor's degree and a master's degree," said an official from the school registrar's office last week.
A short time later, the Baptist Christian College disassociated itself from the Sacramento branch - thebranch Drummond now claims to have obtained his degree from - because the director of that branch was not supplying accurate academic information about its students to the degree-granting mother college, said Thorpe.
Thorpe said he would not discuss specifics about the alleged "character problems," other than to say the school had been made aware of Drummond's notoriety in the newspapers in Missouri and in Concordville.
Many of the articles detailed how Drummond's first two churches, in Pacifica, Calif. and Springfield, Mo., collapsed in financial ruin.
"Frankly, I think the man has problems," said Thorpe."Under no circumstances will we grant him a degree now or in the future," he said.
Baptist Christian College of Shreveport, La. terminated its relationship with an extension campus, Sacramento Baptist College of Citrus Heights, Calif., after charges of academic fraud were leveled by the mother school, according to James Thorpe, president of Louisiana institution.
Drummond's case was an example, said Thorpe. The Sacramento college placed the controversial pastor on the Louisiana college's list to graduate with a PhD. in 1982.But when school officials examined Drummond's academic record it was incomplete. There was no record of a bachelor's or master's degree, Thorpe said.

Quivering Daughters: The Bondage of Betrothal [cached]
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5, NASB)
- Betrothal: God's Best for You?-Pastor James Thorpe argues passionately that the system of betrothal combined with bounded choice amounts to forced marriage, which isn't just contrary to God's will, it's a human rights violation.
