Three U.Va.-Wise students sentenced for attack on SGA president after apparent fraternity dispute
Steve Hopkins, 25, of Wise; Jeremy Lyn Male, 27, of Wise; and Keynen Ry Almer, 23, of Virginia pleaded guilty Wednesday to assaulting SGA President Jimmy Joe Adkins during the college's homecoming football game Sept. 28.
Hopkins, Male and Almer were arrested after they apparently confronted Adkins
during the game about a fraternity dispute.
...The three are members of Pi Lambda Phi, and Adkins is a member of Gamma Chi Omega. Adkins
voluntarily got into a vehicle with Hopkins, Male and Almer and was taken to a home in Wise.
It was there that the three were involved in whipping Adkins
on the back with Adkins' chain necklace, said prosecutors.
The three were originally charged with abduction and assault and battery.

U.Va.-Wise Public Relations Director Jane Meade Dean said that at about 1:15 p.m., the three students approached Student Government President Jimmy Joe Adkins in the parking area of the Carl Smith Stadium and told him to get into their vehicle.
Witnesses said Adkins
entered the vehicle voluntarily, but after the vehicle left the stadium, a witness contacted campus police fearing that Adkins
could be in danger.
...According to campus Police Chief Steve McCoy, Adkins was "roughed up" during the incident but did not need medical attention.

Stephen Wade Hopkins, 25, and Jeremy Lyn Male, 27, both of Wise, and Keynen Ry Almer, 23, of Virginia Beach were arrested Saturday after campus officials said they demanded that UVa-Wise senior Jimmy Joe Adkins get into their vehicle just before the homecoming football game.

allegedly drove Adkins
to Hopkins' home in Wise, according to college officials.The three then allegedly removed Adkins' shirt and chain necklace, then struck him with the chain, they said.
College officials have said that the three men were apparently upset that a rival fraternity's letters were painted on Hopkins' house.Adkins is a member of the Gamma Chi Omega fraternity.
"The actions of three do not reflect on Phi Lambda Phi as a whole," Adkins
said before the arraignment. Adkins
