And Desert Theatre League President Jim Warner, who attended Oden's dinner last weekend, lamented the lack of a local regional theater with stage stars this week while two other participants at that dinner, Lenny and Debbie Green, were booking stage stars in country clubs because they couldn't find public venues in which to book them locally.

"We honor excellence and we have a battery of judges that have different tastes and they vote their conscience," said Desert Theatre League President Jim Warner.

Warner and his production partner Mary Wright created a faster-than-usual ceremony, coming in at 2½ hours, with entertaining production numbers by the Masquers.

'Butterflies Are Free' Coming to Metropolitan Community Theatre
CATHEDRAL CITY - Metropolitan Community Theatre, in association with Jim R. Warner, presents the touching and heartwarming comedy "Butterflies are Free" by Leonard Gershe, opening May 20.
The play is directed by two-time Desert Theatre League winner Jim R. Warner and features Elliott Ehlers, Rachael Waldroop, Elly Sproston and Jacob Varley in the cast.
Warner has a Master's degree in Theatre from Occidental College in Los Angeles and has 40 years experience in community and professional theater in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.In 2001 he directed A.R. Gurney's popular play "Love Letters" and in 2002, a musical revue "Bits 'n' Pieces" at the Oasis Resort in Palm Springs.In 2002 Warner joined the roster of theater people who have worked at Groves Cabin Theatre in Morongo Valley.His direction of "Visiting Mr. Green" won the Desert Theatre League's award for Outstanding Director of a Drama.In 2003 Warner directed the Tony Award-winning dark comedy "Art" and early in 2004 he directed "Proof," winner of a Tony and the 2000 Pulitzer Prize, at Groves.For "Proof" he received the Desert Theatre League's 2004 award for Outstanding Director of a Drama.Warner is currently president of Desert Theatre League.
