Cabinet.com - Advice from the pros: Practice

www.cabinet.com [cached]

Hughes first started thinking about all of this when his then 10-year-old son , Nick , fell in love with the sport and kept asking questions about the game and how to play it better.About two-thirds of the pros he wrote to answered his letters with pictures , autographs or advice that Hughes would like to compile into a book eventually. In the basement of his Hoyt Street home , framed photos of old-time players hang from a wall , as father and son , who is now 12 , sift through several ring binders containing more photos and letters.Hard work , practice , determination , talent and having something to fall_back on ranked high on the list for most players.Phil Scooter Rizzuto , who played second base for the New_York Yankees during the 40s and 50s , wrote_back on a couple of index cards included with his Hall of Fame card and an autographed picture of him turning a double play from the keystone base.To be a professional ball player , you must play your best every game , eat well , get your rest and find_out what you do best , hitting or pitching or fielding , then work harder on the things you're not so good at , Rizzuto wrote.Don Mattingly is a great example of a player who made himself an outstanding one , even though he was a slow runner , Rizzuto's note said.Try your best , hope for the best and if you don't quite make the grade , you can look proud and say , ‘at least I tried.' But never even think you can't make it.Confidence is the key..Hughes has written to many of the players a second time , asking for their permission to use the photos and letters in his book , so he can share with other people what the players had to say.So far , about 80 players have signed releases.I don't want to sit here and hide them in my dungeon and gloat over them day after day , said Hughes , who works as a detective with the Merrimack Police_Department.Some players described specific techniques they used to hone their skills. One major leaguer , who grew_up on a farm , wrote about hitting kernels of corn with a broomstick to improve his swing.Others practiced by bouncing a ball off steps and fielding the return. The only advice I could give you on how to become a major leaguer is to practice , practice , practice.Hughes , however , said he prefers hearing from the older players since most of them didn't know going into spring training if they would make the team , and had to hold_down other jobs during the off season. It's hard to relate to some guy who's making $ 15 or $ 20 million a year ... and I thought perhaps these guys ( the old timers ) might have something worth saying , Hughes said.
