Jim Hakes is a Senior Associate in the San Francisco office of Handel Architects.
He is currently the Project manager for the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, a one-million-square-foot mixed-use project currently under construction in the United Arab Emirates. Located in Abu Dhabi's prestigious new Al Sowwah Island fi nancial district between the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange and the Cleveland Clinic, Rosewood Abu Dhabi includes a fi ve-star Rosewood hotel, serviced apartments, banquet facilities, spa, fi tness center, retail space, restaurants, and parking. The project is scheduled for completion in 2012 and will seek LEED certification. Mr. Hakes recently completed 631 Folsom Street, a luxury high-rise residential project in downtown San Francisco, where he was responsible for the project's construction documents, specifi cations, and consultant coordination. He was also Project Manager for the design phase of NOVE San Francisco, a LEED Platinum residential development in San Francisco completed in 2010. Mr. Hakes has also been instrumental in the design of Territoria Luz, a new 29,000-square-meter office project in Santiago, Chile. This 18-story tower is wrapped in silvery glass curtainwall with tigris mesh screening to create a protective layer against solar heat gain. The building's massing was approached as a series of staggered cubes offset from one another to create outdoor terraces that can be utilized by the employees as break out space. Prior to joining Handel Architects, Mr. Hakes was a Project Manager at GBQC Architects in Philadelphia where he worked on educational, hospitality, office, museum, and federal government projects. Mr. Hakes was also a Project Architect at DeStefano + Partners in Chicago, where he completed the renovation of McDonald's corporate headquarters. Mr. Hakes holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Taubman College at the University of Michigan. While completing his Master of Architecture at The University of Pennsylvania School of Design, Mr. Hakes was awarded the E. Lewis Dales Memorial Fellowship, the David Lukens Bockius, Jr. Traveling Scholarship, and the Frank Miles Day Memorial Prize. He is a registered architect in California and Pennsylvania, and a member of the American Institute of Architects, and a LEED Accredited Professional.
"We were looking to make a very common-sense building that would fit into an already great urban neighborhood close to amenities and multiple public transit options," says Handel Architects senior associate James Hakes.
Common sense, perhaps, but not yet common practice. Ranging in size from 1,290 square feet to 1,990 square feet, the units outperform Title 24 Energy Code by 54% to 71%. James Hakes James Hakes
