Three current School Board members - chairman Lloyd Jackson (Fairfield District), Jim Fiorelli (Three Chopt) and Hugh Palmer (Varina) - opted not to seek re-election, opening a majority of the board's seats to newcomers.The four candidates are seeking to replace Jim Fiorelli, who is stepping down after one term.Lucy Zuercher, a small business owner and community volunteer who finished second to Fiorelli in a three-way race in 2003, has promoted herself as the most visible and most active within the community of the four candidates.

Board member Jim Fiorelli said the policy would be an added benefit for teachers.He's in favor of the policy applying only to teachers, not administrators.He said teachers may be uncomfortable with having to discipline their boss's child, though he said his concerns aren't great enough to prevent him from voting for the policy to apply to all full-time employees.
