On the 76th day of Christmas, Jim Cosgrove will hire a cashier.
He has to. The retail version of the calling-birds splurge comes before Christmas, rather than after it. And Cosgrove, the manager of the Target store on Peach Street, needs a head start. "We use a lot of seasonal employees," he said.

On this, the 76th day of Christmas, Jim Cosgrove will hire a cashier.
He has to. The retail version of the calling-birds splurge comes before Christmas, rather than after it. And Cosgrove, the manager of the Target store on Peach Street, needs a head start. "We use a lot of seasonal employees," he said. "We need to get them in, get them trained and get them up to speed before it gets real busy." The store will keep hiring until the second week of November, he said. It is not yet clear how many jobs will be offered. Cosgrove will have some competition: Toys R Us plans to hire approximately 40,000 holiday workers, the company said last week.

Jim Cosgrove, store director at Target, said the rush of early-morning shoppers was as large as usual.
He even said he would stack his sales for the morning up against the numbers his store put up on Black Friday 2007. But like retailers around the country, he can't say with any certainty that the good news will continue. "I am doing well today, but it's been a very tough month," he said. Cosgrove said his store sales were driven on deep discounts on cameras, GPS units and a 26-inch TV.

Jim Cosgrove, manager of Target on upper Peach Street, said the department store started hiring seasonal employees in October.
It will hire 50 to 60 workers, about the same as in the 2007 season, raising total employment to about 215, he said. For the year, Cosgrove said, his store is doing more business than in 2007, but he said sales this quarter are behind the final quarter in 2007. He declined to provide sales figures. "We're hoping it improves as we get closer to Christmas," he said. Reduced tour-bus business from Canada, due to the economy and a weaker Canadian dollar, is the main reason for the slow quarter, Cosgrove said.

Jobs at the local Target store at 6700 Peach St. will include sales, cashier and stock positions, said Jim Cosgrove, store team leader.
"We're feeling pretty good about the coming season. Things are starting to pick up," Cosgrove said.
