Hickory tournament is holding its own: Correll

Executive Director Jim Correll attributes the event's success to strong community involvement and his staff's ability to make the golfers feel welcome. Net proceeds from the tournament are donated to nearly 30 charities throughout the Catawba Valley.
Correll, who also serves as chairman of the Champions Tour Tournament Association, recently spoke to the Charlotte Business Journal about the event and how he sees it taking shape in the years to come.

They found that person in Jim Correll, a banker and a community leader who had proven his worth with years of civic successes in the Hickory area.
Rock Barn and the Hickory/Catawba County area have been the beneficiaries since Correll joined and spearheaded the effort, and now the tournament is entering its fifth year as the world's best senior golfers prepare to tee it up Sept. 10-16.
Correll's enthusiasm and charisma, plus his leadership and organizational skills, have assured the tournament a permanent place on the play-for-pay circuit.
In its four previous years, the Classic has given well over $400,000 to area charities, making it easily the biggest money-raiser and contributor of the kind in the Greater Hickory area, even after giving out more than $1 million a year in prize money. This year's purse will total $1,600,000.
Rock Barn owner Don Beaver and President of Rock Barn Properties John Hemmings tapped Correll in late 2002 as the man to lead its sales and marketing efforts after a Champions Tour date was secured for the following year.
Correll proved so successful during his first months on the job that he was given the title of Executive Tournament Director and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.
His primary duty originally was in securing sponsors for the tournament, a natural considering his familiarity with the corporate landscape of the area.A fact further qualifying him for the position was the success and attention given the Hickory Sportsman's Club, of which he was co-founder in 1985 with the late Bones McKinney.
Membership is now 225 with a waiting list of more than 500 and the club is host to nationally-known sports figures several times a year.
Sponsorships are the backbone of a tournament's financial stability and Correll continues to excel in that facet. The 2007 sponsors are testimony to his zeal and effectiveness and include: Kia Motors, Northstar Financial Group, Greater Hickory Metro, Pepsi Cola, Corning, Bank of America, Republic Services, Neil Medical Group, CommScope, Duke Energy, Charter Digital TV/Internet, IFH, BB&T, Wachovia, Hickory Daily Record, The Hickory Printing Group, Hickory Furniture Mart, Embarq, and Rock Barn Golf Club and Spa.
"Jim's done a fantastic job, he interacts well with everyone, and he's done outstanding work in securing sponsors from the get-go."
"Jim has been a force from the beginning," Hemmings said.
James L. Correll, Jr. is responsible for all aspects of the Greater Hickory Classic, including sponsorships, player relations and maintaining a key relationship with the PGA Tour.He also handles external media relationships and is spokesman for the event.
An active member of the community since 1983, due primarily to a career in the financial services industry, he spent 20 years with Bank of America (formerly Nationsbank and NCNB).
That tenure included roles as vice-president/Greater Hickory Area and senior vice president/Catawba Valley Region.
Correll served in executive management positions with other area and regional companies, was executive board member for the Hickory Metro Sports Commission, president of Lake Hickory Rotary Club, and chairman of the Catawba County Economic Development Commission.
He is currently serving a two-year term on the PGA Champions Tour Tournament Association Board of Directors and is liaison between the tour, players and respective tournaments.
Correll is a native of Winston-Salem, attended R. J. Reynolds High School and received a B.A. degree from Elon University. He's married to the former Liz Zerden of Hickory and they have two sons and three grandchildren.
The Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn is poised for another successful tournament in September. The "Battle at the Barn" is its self-described euphemism and, whatever it's called, it has a long and bright future under the capable leadership of Jim Correll.
