Jim Aaron, vice president of merchandising, Carpet One Floor & Home, said that the group still feels laminate flooring is a viable category despite its collapsing price points and increasing market pressure from home centers, Lumber Liquidators and other emerging channels.
After more than a year of research, the new Laminate for Life program has been specifically redesigned to address these challenges, he said. The original Laminate for Life program was phased out two years ago for what became the Mirror Lake laminate collection. "We looked at hundreds of SKUs from our approved suppliers and also non-approved suppliers - we looked at everything," said Aaron. "We wanted to put together the best assortment and didn't limit ourselves to one, two or five vendors but ultimately we wanted to keep it to as few as possible so that it doesn't get confusing." Mannington, Mohawk and Shaw were ultimately chosen for their combination of leading designs, price points, warranties and speed to market, according to Aaron. The Laminate for Life display differentiates products by warranty, not price, and works on Carpet One's Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium ranking system, said Aaron, adding that the collection contains an entire range of 6mm to 12mm products. "In the end, this system encourages natural trade ups in the store," he said. Aaron said that the Titanium portion of the collection "pops" and that consumers are "immediately drawn" to it. That's where the best styles live and where our members have the best opportunity to make margin," he said.
