Prior to the Hawks' recent repeat, LIU won back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007 and the Blackbirds are eyeing a return to the top behind a talented arsenal headlined by 2009 Most Valuable Performer Jessie Gaines (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch).
Another big meet from Gaines, who took the league by storm during her rookie season of 2009, will only move them closer to that end. Rookie Monika Akello (Kampala, Uganda) appears poised to pick up points in any one of three events. She leads the NEC in the 500-meter while ranking second in both the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run.

The team title went to Monmouth, but it was Long Island that nearly completed a clean sweep of the meet's major individual awards thanks to freshman sensation Jessie Gaines (Chespeake, VA/Western Branch).
The three-time Road Runner Sports NEC Rookie of the Week piled up the accolades. Gaines claimed the NEC Most Valuable Performer award while also being named the NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer and the meet's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer.

Wagner sophomore Samantha Jensen won the 100m hurdles in 13.71, besting the mark LIU's Jessie Gaines posted in 2012 (13.77).
