Renoir: Renoir was best known for their uniquely shaped solid copper jewelry. Growing out of the American Arts & Crafts movement, copper was a popular choice for early 20th century metalworkers active in the Arts & Crafts design. Renoir was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1946 by Jerry Fels, and from the outset he took the company in the direction of contemporary abstract designs evocative of modern art just coming on the scene. Recreating the look of hand-hammered copper as their material of choice, Renoir has always made a nice change from the more typical costume jewelry using rhinestones as the key material. The Fels family also founded another important name in 20th century costume jewelry, Matisse, Ltd. Matisse also created fine copper jewelry but added enamel decoration to the surface and taking the jewelry in new directions. Both Renoir and Matisse ceased ongoing operations in 1964. Renoir was manufactured in California by Jerry Fels and his partners, and this prolific company made Renoir (copper without enamel), Matisse (copper with enamel) and much less often found Sauterne, a sterling silver line. Other less well known companies also specialized in copper. The choice of a Beatnik generation, these pieces were the flip side for people for whom glitzy rhinestone didn't appeal. Renoir/Matisse - Jerry Fels founded the Renoir line of jewellery in Los Angeles in 1946. Their jewellery was made mainly from copper although they did use sterling silver. From the 1930s to the 50s copper was popular with metal workers active in the Arts and Crafts designs of that time. The jewellery was contemporary and abstract in design and leaned towards modern art. It had a hand-hammered look using rhinestones as the key material. Jerry Fels and his family founded Matisse Ltd in 1952.

"Renoir of Hollywood" was founded by Jerry Fels, his brother-in-law, and another friend in 1946 and following a disastrous fire in 1948, changes were made the company was now "Renoir of California, Incorporated".Fels chose the name, Renoir, after noticing the success of Monet costume and he wanted the name to reflect his intent of producing fine, artistic jewelry.

Later, in 1952, Fels started a new line of jewelry - "Matisse, Ltd". his line produced copper jewelry very similar to the Renoir line, but included enameling. One will notice that some jewelry designs are marked "Renoir" or "Matisse", while others are marked "Renoir Matisse".Designs that were made in copper only were marked with only Renoir and designs only with enameling were marked Matisse.
