Dr. Jerome Poland fatally injured in Wyoming crash Friday
Dr. Jerome Poland, described as a man with a zest for life and compassion for others, was fatally injured Friday in an auto crash in Wyoming.
Poland, 75, was visiting friends out West when he and his wife Meredith were injured in the crash Friday afternoon.
She went through surgery and was reportedly recovering in a Montana hospital.
Poland, who grew up in the Twin Cities, was drawn to the lakes area through his wife's family cabin on Bay Lake.
He started the Crosby Eye Clinic 38 years ago and grew the business into one that employs 46 people in three clinics - Crosby, Baxter and Remer - plus additional outreach at four more clinics in McGregor, Onamia, Staples and with the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.
But his career had a much larger breadth than the immediate Brainerd lakes area.
Poland had one of the first lasers in the state for Lasik surgery to correct vision ending the need for contacts or glasses for patients.
He developed Occucoat, which is used in cataract surgery.
He was an investigator for Hydrocurve for extended wear contact lenses."He was very well respected in the ophthalmology community," said Lynne Wiebke, clinic administrator, who worked with Poland for 34 years.
Wiebke said Poland was committed to bringing state-of-the-art eye care to the lakes area.
On a one-to-one basis, Poland was described as someone who even in a fast-paced world took time to give the person he was with his full attention.
His staff said he wanted others to be successful and took the time to support them in being their best.
Dick Breen, Brainerd, knew Poland first as a patient and then as an energetic volunteer for nonprofits who moved fundraising to new levels.
And, Breen said, Poland seemed to know everyone personally, bringing in entertainment - such as performer Tony Sandler for a recent Central Lakes College Foundation concert - with those personal connections.
He always came through," Breen said of Poland.
Poland seemed to have mastered the often illusive skill of balancing a demanding career with life away from the work place.
He was active with the Central Lakes College Foundation and taught at the University of Minnesota.
Wiebke said Poland had amazing energy.
Wiebke said Poland leaves a legacy of caring, of wanting the best for the entire community and a desire to see prosperity for the entire lakes region.
God bless you Dr. Poland.
