"If there were any witnesses, we ask them to call us at 617-349-3300," said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for the Cambridge Police Department.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Cambridge police spokesman Jeremy Warnick said.
Due to MONROEs proximity to other nightclubs, gathering detailed information about how many times police have responded to violent incidents related to Chowdhurys Central Square establishment is tricky, according to Jeremy Warnick, communications director for the Cambridge Police Department.
But the 400 block of Mass. Ave., which also houses the Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub, has seen its share of incidents. In the last three years from June 1, 2013 to June 12, 2016 Warnick said CPD has responded to 22 aggravated assaults within the 400 block of Mass. Ave., where MONROE, as well as Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub, is located. Aggravated assault is defined as an unlawful attack by one person upon another wherein the offender uses a weapon or displays it in a threatening manner, or the victim suffers obvious severe or aggravated bodily injury involving apparent broken bones, loss of teeth, possible internal injury, severe laceration or loss of consciousness. Page 2 of 3 - Five of those 22 assaults were specifically said to have taken place at MONROE at 450 Mass. Ave.: one in 2014, one in 2015 and three in 2016. Just this past week, in addition to the shooting Sunday, a Salem woman was leaving MONROE when she and her friends were assaulted by six women. One woman was Tasered in the eye by a suspect and transported to the hospital. Of the 17 remaining aggravated assaults that took place more generally on the 400 block: six occurred in 2013 (May to December); three in 2014; seven in 2015, and one so far in 2016. The challenge when looking at these figures is that it doesnt necessarily capture all activity that may have been initiated in the area, but was reported to have occurred elsewhere, explained Warnick. You cant, said Warnick, We cant definitely say all these incidents are related to MONROE. MONROE has its own bouncers to watch the door and keep tabs on trouble, according to Warnick, but the club will hire police details when officers are available. They dont consistently have a police detail, however, said Warnick. Theyll hire out for one, but that doesnt mean theyll always have an officer sign up for it. During the early-morning shooting this past Sunday, Warnick said officers were close to the club anyway, which is why they were able to respond quickly. We have an increased presence in that vicinity, partly because of the Orlando shooting, but also more broadly. A large amount of people flow into the streets all at one time (as bars close for the night), said Warnick.
Fortunately the shooter was a poor shooter," said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for the Cambridge Police Department.
Two buildings at 58 Charles St. and 222 Third St. were struck with bullets, perhaps from ricochet, said Warnick. At minimum, Hooks would need a FID card to carry the shotgun legally, according to Warnick. Page 2 of 2 - Warnick said it was an isolated incident. "We don't believe there's cause for public concern," said Warnick.
