MJC qualifies for the grant as a Latino-serving institution because of its high Latino enrollment rates (29 percent at the time it applied for the grant), said Jenni Abbott, MJC director of grants and resource development.
Abbott said the grant should help more students not only improve their skills in math and sciences, but also get them excited about those fields. "Many students don't really look at careers in math and science because they think, 'Oh, I'm not good at this,' " she said.
