After graduating from Austin High School, Hager attended the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in English in 2004 and worked as a third-grade elementary teacher in 2005 in Washington, D.C. She took an internship with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) from September 2006 to May 2007, which took her to Latin America and the Caribbean to document the lives of children in need.
