Jenna Bush Hager to speak on "The Power of Compassion"
Posted by admin on 23 July 2012, 9:20 pm Jenna Bush Hager to speak on "The Power of Compassion" "We are thrilled to present Jenna Bush Hager and believe that her appearance will be a great event," said Beth Spurry, president of The Women & Girls Fund. "Jenna Hager will talk about people who have inspired her, but I've come to believe that she's the one with the gift to inspire. She wants people to reach out and get involved in their communities, and that's wonderfully in synch with the mission of The Women & Girls Fund." Hager's presentation will include the story of a young Central American woman she met while working as an intern for UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund) in 2006. Hager recalls that even though the 17-year old single mother was living with HIV, she was determined to shield her child from the kind of abuse and neglect she had suffered. Hager's best-selling book, "Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope," is about the devastation that the HIV/AIDS epidemic has on individuals, families and communities. Thirty-year old Jenna Bush Hager is the younger of the twin daughters of former President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush, and the granddaughter of former President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush. According to the New Haven Register, Hager told the graduates that she had learned a great deal from her UNICEF work in Latin America, and also from the inner-city third graders she taught at a charter school in Washington, DC. Many of those youngsters, she said, live complicated lives, weighed down by poverty, hunger, violence and, in the case of one of her students, a father's incarceration. Hager lives in New York City and is a contributing correspondent for NBC's Today, contributing monthly "inspiring stories of wonderful people doing great things across America. Hager and a friend recently founded the Novo Project - a website and community where change makers can gather. In 2008, Hager co-authored "Read All About It" with her mother, Mrs. Laura Bush, in an effort to encourage children to read. As chair of UNICEF's Next Generation, Hager is head of an initiative dedicated to reducing the number of preventable childhood deaths around the world.
