"We came here just over nine years ago, me and my wife and three children, and started a church from scratch," Sangl remembered."That's how we started. At that point we took the funds out of our pocket, sold vehicles, whatever it took to make ends meet at the beginning."
Greensburg may seem an odd choice at first, but Sangl says it was the right place.
"I just felt a calling to start a church, that had always been a dream and desire, a passion I had, to start a ministry from scratch," he said."It just felt like Greensburg was the place."
Sangl founded the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle, located on Barachel Lane, and though he worked a full-time job to support his family, still dedicated countless hours to the building of his ministry.
"We had a building, but really our efforts were more an in-home based thing," he said.
"We will gather either where someone would like to have someone come into their home or a member's home," Sangl said."It's really about helping each other, getting to know one another, ministering to the needs of individual families, individual people."
Sangl's commitment to helping individuals is why he was first nominated for the Volunteer of the Week.
"He has to be recognized for his outstanding character and everything he does for everyone," said the here-unnamed person who nominated him."He is patient, kind, loving. He reaches out to everyone, he's not selfish."
"Reaching out to everyone" has always been a key part of the mission, according to Sangl.
"If you minister to the individual needs of a person, then they can come together collectively," he said."Once the Church was first started, the Apostles went from house to house. To me that is the backbone of any church."
Sangl noted there was a bit of trouble at first, even though he was voluntarily seeking to help people.
"What I would say is, the biggest challenge in starting a church is just getting people to trust," he noted."There's a general (distrust) of people who want to minister, who want to be a help. The biggest challenge we face is just becoming a friend to someone. It's hard for people to believe that there really are people out there who want them to succeed, not only as a Christian but as a person in general."
With the toil, does come reward though, Sangl explained.
