Rhodes , DDSThe Child Advocate Award is given each year to a Chapter member , a non-Chapter member or group who has , through advocacy for the needs of children , made a significant contribution to the well-being of children.William Tompkins , DDS and Jeffery Rhodes , DDS , knew that Maryland's dental decay and oral health status was among the worst in the nation , and they knew that children growing up in an area with non-fluoridated water have a 50% higher rate of tooth decay.They set out to do something about it , and this time , with their leadership in the Cumberland and Frostburg area , local laws , that forbade the addtion of fluoride to the public water supply in the cities of Frostburg and Cumberland , were removed.William Tompkins , DDS , President of the Allegany/Garrett Dental Society , saw the impact of fluoride first hand when working with the Indian Health Service on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming.With one half of the Reseervation fluridated , you could tell which side of the Reservation the child lived in when he opened his mouth , said Dr. Tompkins.Dr. Tompkins is a graduate of the University of Maryland , College Pard , and the University of Maryland Dental School.Dr. Tompkins moved to Cumberland in 1987 and moved his practice to La Vale in 1991.Jeffery Rhodes , DDS is Past President of the Allegany/Garrett Conuty Dental Society , and a recently-elected Commissioner for Frostburg City Council.Dr. Rhodes ran for office to assure passage and implementation of fluoride in the water supply for Frostburg.While Cumberland's water supply is in Pennsylvania , the Pure Water Committee has appealed their defeat , delaying fluoridation.Frostburgh has implemented fluoridation.Dr. Rhodes is a graduate of Frostburg State University and the University of Maryland Dental School.He served in the US Navy Dental Corps , and is currently in practice in La Vale , Maryland.MD AAP 2000 Annual Meeting HighlightsFor further information about this page , please contact : firstname.lastname@example.org Copyright , 2000.Maryland Chapter , American Academy of Pediatrics.Last updated 9/2000
CUMBERLAND - Bishop Walsh Principal Sam Torres announced Monday that Dr. Jeff Rhodes is the new head boys basketball coach at the school, succeeding Gene Paul.Rhodes went on to play basketball for two years at Western Maryland College and later graduated from Frostburg State in 1983.He graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1987 and then became a member of the United States Navy Dental Corps.He has practiced dentistry locally since 1991.Rhodes saw some very positive things from last year's Spartans who had the school's best Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament showing in years."My main goal," said Rhodes, "is to strengthen our junior varsity program, and to make sure that our youth league teams remain competitive."He cited the need for a strong feeder program to sustain a successful program as reason for making it such a strong priority.Rhodes was a local referee for several years, officiating both at the high school and college level.He has coached freshman teams at both Beall and Bishop Walsh, and he has coached in several youth leagues."I officiated for over 10 years in the area and have done some work on the West Coast as well.It helped keep my hand in a sport that I love, but now that I have kids who will be involved, I wanted to step over to the coaching side."Rhodes is married and lives in Cumberland.He and his wife Karrey have three sons: Kyle is entering the 10th grade, Liam is entering the 8th grade, and Sean is entering the 4th grade at Bishop Walsh."I have to thank my wife and kids for allowing me this opportunity," said Rhodes.Torres stated, "Jeff brings enthusiasm and dedication to Bishop Walsh.Dr. Jeff Rhodes / (Click for larger image) Resources
