The long-awaited Berkshire Valley Golf Course is 68 percent complete, with grass already growing well on some of the slopes, tees and greens planted last fall, according to Jeffrey Biggs, director of engineering services for the Morris County Park Commission.
There are several ponds on the site fed by streams and groundwater, said Biggs
.They will provide the water for the irrigation system of pumps and pipes throughout the course. The county also drilled two wells it can use to replenish the ponds, if necessary, said Biggs
The lack of rain and snow this winter actually has helped during construction, "but now that we are ready to grow grass, it will affect irrigation," said Biggs
.The state drought management plan allows golf courses to irrigate.
The course's pump house was designed to look like the 1917 stone mansion of Alfred Ringling, one of the five Ringling Brothers, who used to house circus elephants on the site across from his estate, said Biggs
