Evolving field has schools scrambling

Agriculture teachers should understand the industry's history but also understand how the field has changed, said Jean Landeen, agricultural-education consultant and agricultural-literacy coordinator for the California Department of Education. They must be able to build community support for their programs and sometimes, she said, have broad expertise, including familiarity with everything from irrigation to pest control to mechanics.
Students who develop those skills often find jobs in agriculture, not education, Landeen said.
...
For agricultural education to remain viable, teachers must be able to respond to those different demands and offer programs that families find relevant, Landeen said.
"The community support is only threatened by the influx of people who have in their minds that agriculture is just farming," she said.
