(McCarus and Patterson both failed to recall her name is Jean Chamberlain, former executive director of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce and former chair of the Woodward Dream Cruise.
Jean Chamberlain, 85, of Royal Oak, is the former director of the Woodward Dream Cruise. Critics think Oakland County should have named some one with transit knowledge to the Regional Transit Authority board. However, Chamberlain attended Better Transit Better Business, a conference at the Detroit Zoo, June 4, 2014. Jean Chamberlain says 'We can do better'
Speaking to a Republican Women's Club audience made up mostly of women and men who have worked with her civically or politically, Oakland County Commission candidate Jean Chamberlain had no need to make grandiose or clichéd promises. Instead, after a brief formal opening, she engaged in conversation and exchanges which by their nature reminded everyone of the experience and background Chamberlain brings to her campaign. During her formal opening, Jean stressed that when she was working under County Executive L. Brooks Patterson , he instructed her to "be nonpartisan in your day-to-day encounters. She says she will bring that work-across-the-aisle mindset to the County Commission; that "We can do better" in developing new solutions to some of the area's problems; that her years of working inside the county Administration will increase her effectiveness on the commission; that she will work with others who share her ideal of keeping government transparent. A résumé of sorts came into view as Chamberlain bantered with her friendly audience. President of her own consulting firm, focused on promoting the region to her clients. Formerly a Director in the County Administration, she remains a consultant to Oakland County Government, serving as Patterson's representative on diverse boards and commissions. Currently president of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association, a group made of of 13 cities with frontage along Eight Mile. Founder and now board member of Woodward Dream Cruise Inc. "We hoped to attract 25,000 people to our first one; 250,000 showed up. Chamberlain acknowledges that some residents are irritated and unhappy about the cruise, but points out that the economic development it generates, "right down to individual businesses selling parking space." Former chair and current member of the Oak Park Business & Education Alliance, a group dedicated to helping grade school students develop learning and social skills. Former Executive Director of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce. Jean's participation in multiple volunteer groups is shared by many in her Republican Women's Club audience, which made it difficult for her to leave the private dining room at Jimi's Restaurant -- I counted six one-on-one chats as she made her way out. And as I left with club president Helen Cost and vice president Muriel Versagi, there was Chamberlain seated at the counter with one last attendee. -- FJV: 22 May 08

Dream Cruise spirit is catching on

Bloomfield Hills has about three miles of Woodward frontage -- 30,000 feet if both northbound and southbound sides are counted, said Jean Chamberlain, cabinet member to Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and former president of the Dream Cruise. They didn't want anyone parking there or even turning around," Chamberlain said. At the city's behest, cruise officials discouraged people from even standing on curbs to watch in Bloomfield Hills. But as more Bloomfield Hills residents began participating, wheeling costly restored cars out to run with the crowds on Woodward, they nudged their city leaders to sign on, Chamberlain said. In addition, new leaders in Bloomfield Hills have opened the city to new ideas, said Chamberlain, who is Oakland County government's liaison to southern Oakland County.
