Javier and his wife Ann Marie live with their three young children in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque. He has a bachelor's degree in political science from Santa Clara University and dual master's degrees in Public Administration and Community Regional Planning at the University of New Mexico.

Javier Benavidez, Vice President Javier is a native New Mexican and will soon graduate from UNM with two master's degrees; one in Public Administration and the other in Community and Regional Planning. His graduate school professional project will provide a resource guide for other Albuquerque neighborhoods interested in establishing their own land trust models similar to the SCLT. Javier co-hosts a weekly public affairs radio show on KUNM 89.9FM and also serves on the boards of local grassroots organizations including 1000 Friends of New Mexico and the Southwest Organizing Project.

The lot is owned by a developer out of Portland, Ore., with the understanding that the community has a say in how it's developed, explained Javier Benavidez, the secretary of the Barelas Community Coalition.
"We have a partnership with the Sawmill Community Land Trust," he said.
Benavidez said they are looking at the move as just one step - rather than a permanent solution - and he acknowledged the need to maintain public safety for everyone in the area. The SouthWest Organizing Project, of which he is also the executive director, hopes to address the root causes of homelessness, rather than simply provide services and quick fixes.
