Jay Edwards, former voice of WSUS, dead at 66
...
VERNON - Jay Edwards, the voice of WSUS radio in Franklin for more than 25 years, died Saturday at home after a brief illness. He was 66.Edwards - whose real name was James E. Normoyle - worked as an announcer, disc jockey and sales director for a number of radio stations in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia over his long career.
...
During his quarter-century with WSUS, Edwards developed a reputation as a philanthropist, devoting much of his time to hundreds of area non-profit agencies and organizations, serving on the board of directors for many of them. Also known as a man with an intense passion for life, Edwards developed many hobbies which eventually became second and third careers for him.One of those hobbies was harness racing, which Edwards developed a passion for after hearing ads run on the radio station. He later became a member, and past president, of the Monticello-Goshen (New York) chapter of the U.S. Harness Writers Association. He delved further into the sport after appearing in promotional stunts at both the Monticello Raceway and Goshen Historical Track. Those activities led Edwards to later become a licensed driver, purchase his own stable and breed his own stock. He also competed in both Europe and Canada as a representative of the United States.Among his greatest pleasures was competing against - and beating - professional reinsmen in wagering races at Monticello and Pocono Downs.Over the years, Edwards drove many winners, including Itainteasybeingreen, Jacpot Doll and Swift Superb. In 1994, Edwards won the USHWA Monticello-Goshen chapter "Good Guy Award" and was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association. Before falling ill, Edwards planned to run for second vice president of the national organization of USHWA.Edwards also had a home in the Florida Keys, where he enjoyed deep sea fishing off his boat, the "Shamrock-n-Roll," and participating in area theater, both as an actor in plays such as "Breaking Legs" and "The Pajama Game," and as a lighting designer.Despite all of his other interests, Edwards found time to restore more than a dozen award-winning classic cars. His most recent career choice, however, was that of restaurateur, as he recently opened the Colombo Italian Pizza Restaurant in Otisville, N.Y.Edwards was born in Astoria, Queens and was a Korean war veteran, where he served in the Navy.In 1987, he helped develop and co-owned WBRA in Panama City, Fla.He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Theresa M.; four daughters, Amanda and Jamie Normoyle at home, Tracie Higgins of New York City, and Jennifer Warga of Easton, Pa.; two sons, Matthew Higgins of New York City, and Alan Warga of Easton; a sister, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Funeral arrangements are by the F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, One Main St., Franklin.
