Jared "Mercy" Staake, 21, of Beardstown, was taken into custody early Friday following a search of his residence.
A press release from Schuyler County Sheriff Don L. Schieferdecker states Staake was involved in a fight with Michael Box, 33, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, at the fair Tuesday night when Staake allegedly stabbed the man. Box was an employee of Fox Carnival. An unconfirmed source claims the incident started when Staake sold the victim a quantity of baking soda which he claimed was cocaine. The man became angry when he discovered he had been duped and the fight ensued. Staake was arrested by Beardstown Police and the West Central Illinois Drug Task Force. A subsequent search of his home lead to the discovery of the alleged murder weapon and the bloody clothes he was wearing the night of the fight. Bond on the murder charge is set at $500,000. Staake was paroled from the Jacksonville Correctional Center in April 2012 where he served 14 months of a three-year sentence for aggravated battery, possession of a stolen firearm, and vandalism. In addition to the Schuyler County charges, he is being held on a no bond warrant from the Department of Corrections for parole violation.
